Haleakala National Park
Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park in Hawaii is a beautiful park on the island of Maui in Hawaii. It is named after the volcano Haleakala, which last erupted in 1790. If you are vacationing on this island then you should definitely visit it.

The national park was established in 1916 and has had the status of an international biosphere reserve since 1980. The volcano itself is 10.022 feet high. The huge crater covers 49 square kilometers and actually consists of a large basin with several volcanic cones, covered by thick layers of ash and pumice.

When you arrive at your destination, you realize that you weren’t the only one who had the idea for a trip to the summit. Also remarkable are the surprisingly fresh temperatures at 9.842 feet above sea level. We therefore recommend to always wear the right clothes. Down at the beaches in Maui it is nice and warm and at the very top it is of course quite cold.

Spectacular photo motifs and sunrise

If you want to take it a little easier, you will find spectacular photo motifs up here, especially in the rising sunlight and in combination with the fog that is lifting. In addition, numerous exotic plants can be found here in front of a rare backdrop. So you quickly forget the early rising and the missing breakfast. This can easily be made up for in the valley on the way to the second part of the national park, which is located on the coast.

Why do you have to get up early:
To enjoy the sunrise

Road to Hana also offers a great view

The winding coastal road, also popular with tourists, is called Road to Hana and offers spectacular views. The special attraction for many tourists is a visit to the summit at sunrise, when the sun slowly breaks through the clouds and fog in the valley. Because up here, you really are above the clouds.

Even the drive through the dark national park at dawn on a well-built road is an experience. You actually get the impression of being almost alone on the way to the summit and still think about why you got up at this ungodly hour on your vacation and set off into the wilderness without breakfast.

Can you also visit the summit there:
Yes, this is also possible

Hiking and how long is the ride

The drive takes a total of 4 hours, but it is definitely worth it. Along the way, you have several opportunities to experience the tropical landscape. Especially worth mentioning is the one-hour hike to the 328 feet-high Waimoku Waterfalls and a side trip to the ponds of Palikea Stream. Here you can refresh yourself at the same time by jumping into the cool water.

In addition, one has the opportunity to relax on a beach with black volcanic sand. When you finally arrive in Hana, you will find a small sleepy place with about 700 inhabitants, which extends over an area of 9 square kilometers. Up to here you have crossed a total of 54 bridges, which you also have to use for the return trip over the 49.7 miles long stretch. The Road to Hana is actually a dead end, certainly the most beautiful in the world with a magnificent view. Here you really feel like in another world.
