The city of Hilo with its approximately 47,000 inhabitants is the largest on the Big Island and also the capital of the county. As a rule, many tourists vacation there who choose to visit this island.

Visit Hilo on Big Island

Hilo is located northeast and near the volcanoes Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, which are about 13123 feet high. The city is one of the rainiest in the world, with about 3,281 milimeters of water falling there each year. So if you don’t necessarily want to get wet, you should vacation there in the months of June and July. Because here the probability of rain is still the lowest.

For tourists, the breathtaking, beautiful waterfalls, such as the Waianuenue, and the fertile rainforests are more than worth seeing and true spectacles. Fascinating gardens with all kinds of plants and flowers also make it an incredibly popular tourist destination. Liliuokalani Gardens and Wailoa River State Park are right next to the city’s most popular hotels. So you don’t have to travel far to see some of the beauty from there.

Other sights to see in Hilo

It is quite a lively town with wonderful museums, such as the Imiloa Astronomy Center or the Pacific Tsunami Museum, and especially for art lovers, the great galleries, such as the East Hawaii Cultural Center, offer a memorable visit. If you prefer to stroll through the shopping centers, you should definitely pay a visit to Sig Zane Designs, Hilo Hattie or Big Island Candies. You’re sure to buy something here, even if it’s just a souvenir.

Hilo Farmers Market and Imiloa Astronomy Center

A true attraction for young and old alike, the Hilo Farmers Market is open year-round. Probably the biggest tourist attraction that brings people from all over the world is the Imiloa Astronomy Center. It is located near the extraordinary titanium cones that mimic the three highest mountains in Hawaii. Numerous exhibits here offer a tour of a koa forest, including a film screening in a style that makes tourists feel as if they could float.

Visit Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo

Nature lovers in particular are likely to enjoy the varied parks and the numerous botanical gardens. There is also an orchid farm to visit. In the middle of the rainforest, visitors will find the Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo, where, in addition to the many exotic plants, they can also see animals that are not at all familiar from European countries. An example is the white Bengal tiger Namaste, whose visit is a unique experience, which they have nowhere else. The Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo is the only one in the USA that is really located in the middle of the tropical rainforest.

Mauna Kea Observatory

If you want to visit the snow-capped and highest mountains, you will have to plan a day trip, but you should definitely not miss this. Another spectacular attraction is the Mauna Kea Observatory. A lunar landscape at 13779 feet above sea level. It is a must for tourists and absolutely worth seeing. And from very high we go very deep into the Kaumana Caves Park. A cave that is very popular and worth a stop. And if you want to see a volcano from above, you should definitely get in one of the helicopters and dare a tour over the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

When is the best time to travel

As you have already experienced, this is one of the rainiest places in the whole world. But of course you would like to have a vacation there and then of course there should not be much rain. We recommend then to make vacation there in June or July and then probability is significantly lower. In the other months, the probability of rain increases significantly again.

Best time to travel:
June or July

Our opinion

If you are on vacation on the Big Island then you will definitely have a look at Hilo. You can see many sights and there are many shopping possibilities. The best thing is to stay in a nice hotel. Then you have the opportunity to explore the island from there and that is always a lot of fun.
