Kahului

The largest city on the island of Maui in Hawaii is Kahului where there are many attractions

Kahului

If you land on the Hawaiian island of Maui and have come by plane from Honolulu, you will find yourself on the territory of the town of Kahului. It is located at the foot of the mighty extinct volcano Haleakala and is not necessarily one of the tourist highlights of Maui.

Everything you need to know about Kahului in Maui

Most visitors only know about the Maui Tropical Botanical Garden near Kahului or you drive directly from the airport to the hotels on the west coast. The town is surrounded by numerous sugar cane plantations and during harvest time, large clouds of smoke often waft through the plains of central Maui. Then the sugar is burned and the rain of ash is jokingly called “Hawaiian Snow” ( hawaiian snow ) by the inhabitants.

Kahului and the immediate neighboring town of Wailuku are something like the economic hub of the island. The city even has two ports. About the international airport and about a small seaport. Industry has settled in the city, as well as several shopping malls that are heavily frequented by residents and guests alike.

Cities grow together more and more

Wailuku has grown together with Kahului in recent years. In the border area of the two cities, hardly anyone knows exactly where the borders run. Wailuku, on the eastern slope of the West Maui Mountains, has one thing over Kahului: the island administration is at home here. And Wailuku has to be driven through when the picturesque Iao Valley or Waikapu Valley with its well-tended orchards are the destinations.

Why are the two cities growing together:
There is a lot of construction going on

These are the sights in Kahului

In contrast, the city offers another attraction, the bird sanctuary around the former royal fish pond, which is worth seeing. Only here visitors can admire the rare Hawaiian stilt. The Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary is an interesting region not only for ornithologists.

On the other hand, those interested in the land and people and the history of the island should not miss the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum. The company of the same name is one of Hawaii’s five major corporations dedicated to the sugar business. And it has been doing so for generations. The museum is located in Puunene, a suburb of Kahului, and tells the history of sugar cane cultivation on Maui. Here you can learn all about the cultivation and processing of the cane.

You can learn a lot about the history in the museum

A German immigrant named Claus Spreckels played a major role in the history of sugar cane on Maui, as he was at the center of a years-long dispute between company owners Henry Baldwyn and Samuel Alexander over water rights. In the museum, photographs and surviving objects tell of the development of production.

What else to see

Culture vultures will be drawn to the Maui Community Art and Cultural Center, while the Maui Zoological and Botanical Garden will draw kids to the small and large animals that live there. The garden on Kaahumanu Avenue is an El Dorado for botanists. If you stand in front of the rather faceless shopping centers of Kahului, you wouldn’t suspect that behind the gray walls are first-class cafes and restaurants.

The onion soup at CD Rush’s Cafe in the Kaahumani Shopping Center has long been a household name among residents. At Maui Mall, the delicacies at Sir Wilfred’s are the culinary highlight. Here you should try the quiches, cheesecake or the tasty basil pasta salad. Or just a cup of capuccino with your croissant.

Our opinion

If you are on vacation in Maui then you should of course also have a look at Kahului. There are numerous sights, shopping opportunities and also good restaurants that you can visit. The capital of the island you must have seen once. Of course, there is also a lot of hustle and bustle because it is a larger city.
