Only a good fifteen minutes by car north of Honolulu rises the Nuuanu Pali viewpoint. Located at 1167 feet, it offers travelers a fantastic panoramic view of the island of Oahu. It is well worth a visit.

Visiting the Nuuanu Pali Lookout

Below, the massive breakers of the Pacific Ocean land, and to the left and right of the astonished tourists, steep rock faces stretch into the sky. Incidentally, these are part of the Koolau Mountains. Hawaii looks back on a fiery past, countless volcanic eruptions formed the mountain and gave it its bizarre face. It certainly looks very impressive.

Like oversized pins, hundreds of thousands of basalt cones line up and together create what is perhaps the most beautiful mountain massif in the Pacific. Furthermore, tourists there have the opportunity to take beautiful photos of the trip. Now in this post you will learn everything about what you should know for a visit.

This is the story of Nuuanu Pali

Declared a National Natural Landmark in 1972, the rocky outcrop is under the special protection of the United States. This is not least due to the fact that a bloody battle was once fought on its plateau. The Hawaiian king Kamehameha I wanted to put all possible aspirants to the throne to flight.

Therefore, in 1795, he ordered his warriors to drive the enemy fighters to Nuuanu Pali. With the king’s well-equipped men in sight and the steep precipice behind them, hundreds of defeated mercenaries plunged to their deaths. A U.S. research team found more than 800 skulls and a multitude of human bones below the cliff. These days, things are just peaceful on the lookout mountain.

Since when is this natural monument:

Enjoy great view and take photos

Those who set out by car to enjoy that fantastic panoramic view will inevitably encounter an impressive natural phenomenon. No landmark and no mountain can be found between the endless Pacific Ocean and the steep, almost vertical cliff. Unhindered, the air masses of the ocean, which is already considered restless and stormy, advance towards Nuuanu Pali.

Is one safe there as a tourist:
Yes, you can visit the Lookout without any problems

You can hear the sounds of the wind there

Favored by the exposed position and the recesses of the basalt rock, visitors will hear a continuous howling and roaring. Hardly in any other place on earth do the sounds of the wind seem louder and more pervasive. Even when it hits the natural barrier of the Koolau Mountains at a modest 18 miles per hour, the air currents create eerie yet atmospheric songs.

Along with this spectacular soundscape, one inhales the grace of the Windward Coast. The name of this stretch of coastline says it all. The salty tongues of the sea have gnawed mighty chunks of rock out of the cliffs and flow around them, foaming angrily with their powerful spray. If the sun shines over the so-called “Aloha State“, the azure-colored tides sparkle promisingly towards Nuuanu Pali.

Are the sounds disturbing for the visitors:
Normally not

Visitors must use the tunnel

Those who can hardly resist this maritime charm follow the road towards the coast, passing through two tunnels. In order not to destroy the flora, fauna and flair of the Hawaiian mountains, the old road over the Koolau is no longer used. All traffic now flows through these two tubes. In the picturesque fishing village of Kailua, it is worthwhile to take another look at the striking cliff. The Nuuanu Pali looks breathtakingly beautiful even from below. The beaches of Kailua are tempting for a swim with a beautiful mountain view.

Why is it not allowed to use the old road anymore:
To protect nature

Our opinion

It is definitely worthwhile for tourists to visit the Nuuanu Pali Lookout once. The view is breathtaking and you have the possibility to take good pictures. But a rental car is always necessary to get there. By the way, you can get there quickly from Honolulu and it is also a great destination that you can do in an afternoon. So visit it once.
